White House Announces Federal Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark
The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.
While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.
Union Response and Court Actions
Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.
This is shameful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.
The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved before then.
During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.
Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. “Starting next week, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Legal and Operational Constraints
Last week, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to block the administration from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge directed the administration to disclose details on layoff plans, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been brought back to carry out layoffs.
An analysis argued that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to carry out firings, referencing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.
Impact on Workers
The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck for the end of September but not the start of the current month, since funding expired at the start of the month.
Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s impact on government workers.
This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate said. The flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”
A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
